JWM, MSC: University of Georgia, Livestock Poultry Building, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia, 30602-2771; DR: H330 Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia, 306022771 search has shown that in mature sows, maternal recognition of pregnancy is achieved approximately 10–13 days after the onset of estrus and subsequent mating.5 Furthermore, embryonic implantation into the uterine wall appears to be accomplished approximately 13–17 days post-estrus.5 Since the uterine environment appears to be ready to maintain pregnancy at 21–28 days postpartum,6,7 theoretically, a combined period of lactation length plus weaning-to-service interval as short as 4–8 days may be sufficient to allow a normal reproductive cycle to continue in mature sows. However, previous research does not address any potential differences between mature and first-parity sows. In this study, data from commercial swine producers using the PigCHAMP® recordkeeping system were used to examine the effects of lactation length on weaning-to-first-service interval, first-service farrowing rate, and first-service litter size in commercial sows of differing parities.

Reproductive performance of purebred Hampshire sows in Sweden
The objective of this study was to retrospectively investigate causes of variation in the reproductive performance of purebred Hampshire sows in Sweden. Data analysed comprised farrowings between 1992 and 1998 from five Swedish nucleus herds and included 6347 litters from 2210 sows. The main traits analysed were litter size, weaning-to-first service interval (WSI), farrowing rate, remating rate...
متن کاملEnvironmental and genetic factors affecting the weaning-estrus interval in sows.
We examined the effects of environmental and genetic factors on the weaning-to-estrus interval (WEI) in sows. In order to perform the analyses of the environmental factors, 8104 observations of the 1st to the 6th WEI were carried out, while 6548 observations of the 1st to the 3rd WEI were carried out for the analyses of genetic factors. The environmental model included as fixed effects, he...

Effects of lactation length and weaning-to-conception interval on the subsequent litter size of purebred sows were estimated using an animal model. Data on 2,847 Landrace sows with 7,125 litters born between January 1989 and May 1997 and on 1,234 Yorkshire sows with 2,999 litters born between January 1990 and May 1997 were obtained from two Canadian selection herds. Sows having a lactation of l...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproductive and growth performances of pig breeds in Douala, Cameroon. The reproductive performance of gilts and multiparous sows (38 per group) from 8 selected farms were monitored and controlled. Thereafter, piglets were controlled from birth to weaning age. The age at first service (AFS), fertility index (FI), fecundity, age at first farrowing (AFF)...
